Andy graduated in 1988 from Glasgow University Vet School and went into Small Animal Practices in the Midlands. It was here that Andy developed an interest in Orthopaedics and he gained his Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics in 1990. Following this he took up an Orthopaedic Residency position at the Queen Mother Hospital at the Royal Veterinary College where he trained to Diploma Level. After this he worked at the Animal Medical Centre for a period before setting up Torrington Orthopaedics in 1999. As our head surgeon Andy is involved in teaching other surgeons new techniques and ways of thinking. He extends this beyond the practice and has delivered seminars across the globe from Australia, Russia and the USA to across Europe, where he is highly regarded. He regularly gives advice to colleagues around the world by phone and email regarding diagnosis and treatment of patients. He heads up our Joint Replacement team here.

Andrea graduated from the University of Bologna (Italy) Veterinary School in 1998. He joined Torrington Orthopaedics in 2009 after working in practice in the UK for the previous 10 years. Andrea is particularly interested in developing new methods for measuring lameness using slow motion video footage. He is part of the Joint Replacement Team here and works closely with Andy Torrington in the application and development of new and “traditional” Orthopaedic Surgical Techniques. Andrea is currently enrolled for a Masters Degree in Orthopaedic Implant Design and Development.

Sergejs (aka CJ) joined us in April 2017. He graduated from the Latvian University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. From 2009 to 2016 he worked in one of the busiest charity hospitals in the UK. That has allowed him to gain excellent surgical experience and to study for the GP certificate in Small Animal Surgery which he completed in November 2015. For the year prior to joining us he worked as the Clinical Director in a small animal hospital, but his desire for further knowledge and experience inspired him to join us here. Sergejs completed his Advanced Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in August 2017.

Helen graduated from University of Glasgow Vet School in 1989. She achieved Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics in 1991 and spent 5 years in Leyton (London) working as Senior Veterinary Officer for the PDSA, becoming their Clinical Advisor in Orthopaedics for London region. A short career break to start a family led to the foundation of Torrington Orthopaedics in 1999 with Andy. Helen is a part of the joint replacement team as well as the main supervising Veterinary Surgeon for MRI and CT. Helen is our Veterinary Acupuncturist and is registered with the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists (ABVA).Helen has always been very keen to develop the role of Veterinary Nurses in our profession. We have encouraged and supported many of our nurses through the Advanced Surgical Diploma, and created different career paths within the practice including Rehabilitation and Team leader roles. Helen was proud to be a member of the RCVS VN Council from 2010 to 2012 as Appointed Veterinary Surgeon and was also a member of the LANTRA committee.

Charlotte graduated from Royal Veterinary College in 2010. She Joined Torrington Orthopaedics in August 2016 and completed her Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in 2018. Charlotte is interested in all aspects of Orthopaedics. She is also very keen to encourage and support new graduates and will be starting a Radiography club in 2021 specifically aimed at improving radiographic diagnostic skills of the younger members of the profession in the Yorkshire region.

Alessandro (aka Alex) graduated from the University of Padua, (Italy) in 2012. Moving to Yorkshire in that the same year, he worked in Small Animal Practice for 3 years before undertaking two rotating internships (at Willows Veterinary Specialists in Birmingham and at the Glasgow Vet School), and also a surgical internship at the Animal Heath Trust in Cambridge. He worked for a few months at the PDSA in Bradford, before joining Torrington Orthopaedics in October 2019. He is currently studying for the Advanced Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Surgery with Liverpool University

Lisa Thompson is our Nursing Manager. She is proud to lead our fantastic team of nurses here at Torrington Orthopaedics. She started nursing in 1997 and joined Torrington Orthopaedics in 2003. Lisa gained her Advanced Surgical Nursing Diploma in 2006 and is part of the hip replacement team, from organising the surgical dates to assisting with surgery. She is also the Advanced Imaging Co-ordinator for the CT/MRI patients and referrals. Lisa also lectures regularly for local Veterinary Nurses and has also lectured at National Congresses.

Becky qualified as an RVN in 2009 and having previously worked in a variety of small animal practices, including a very busy forward thinking first opinion practice. There she was a clinical coach involved with training student veterinary nurses and gained an accredited certificate in small animal hydrotherapy. She joined the Torringtons' team in March 2014 to increase her knowledge and follow her interest of orthopaedic surgery. Her passion lies with anaesthesia and pain management- and to that end she competed her Advanced Nursing Diploma with a dissertation on the use of local anaesthetic blocks for which she gained a distinction. When not at work or studying she kept very busy with her young son, Reuben and his very active social life!

Charlie qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 2003 and joined the team at Torrington Orthopaedics in late 2004. During this time she has achieved a NOCN qualification in Canine Hydrotherapy, a City & Guilds qualification in Small Animal Nutrition and a COAPE certificate in Canine Behaviour.Charlie is passionate about rehabilitation, pain management and comfort of the patients on our wardsand spends a lot of time working along side our resident physiotherapists Hannah and Frankie, providing rehabilitation to our patients. She is Wards Team leader and ensures hygiene and infection control is maintained at our very high standards and oversees all the cleaning regimes and environmental swabs for the kennels area. Charlie leads her team to make sure our patients get top notch treatment and TLC. She is also a clinical coach and mentors our student VNs and our Apprentice Veterinary Care Assistants.

Sian graduated from The University of York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology, Conservation and the Environment. She qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2009 and after working in two busy veterinary hospitals joined Torrington Orthopaedics in 2012. It is here that she achieved her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing in 2017. As well as thoroughly enjoying all surgical aspects of nursing she also has a passion for the environment. She leads our practice ‘Green Team’ as the ‘Green Ambassador’ to help to oversee our journey in completing and achieving the iiE (Investors in the Environment) awards by setting targets, altering and modifying as many aspects in and around the hospital as possible to achieve these targets and ultimately reducing our impact on the environment.
Lily qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2017 having worked in general practice since 2013. She joined Torrington Orthopaedics in April 2018. She says "I wanted to enter veterinary referral work because I love helping poorly pets overcome some major surgeries and injuries, at Torringtons I get to spend a lot more time with the patients and treat each one as if it were mine! The team at Torringtons are great and we all motivate each other to do better by our patients and our clients." She has completed a Diagnostic Imaging Certificate and also is very interested in all aspects of pain relief including acupuncture.

Abi is one of our senior nurses. She joined the practice in 2016 having qualified as a nurse in 2013. She completed her Advanced Diploma in Nursing in 2019 with a dissertation on chronic pain management in dogs in which she has a keen interest . Abi supports our Nursing Manager and the Team Leaders in the smooth running of the hospital making sure that theatres are booked appropriately and that we have adequate stocks of medicines and equipment.

Marie joined Torrington Orthopaedics in 2016. She loves nursing our patients and gets great satisfaction helping them to settle into the hospital and overcome any anxieties they have. She is currently studying for a certificate in feline nursing, and is our cat advocate making sure we are all up to date in how we look after our feline patients well.

Claire joined our team in 2018 as one of our fabulous weekend team.She loves surgical nursing and has a passion for ensuring our patients are well cared for and their pain relief is optimal. She is a busy working mum, and loves spending time with her family walking outdoors and working in the garden.
Mike joined the practice in 2006 after a period in general practice where he did his nurse training. He is a senior member of staff and Team Leader in the surgical area where he is responsible for the smooth running of the day, organising the surgical lists and making sure that all the equipment is properly maintained and in good working order.
Becky is a Student Veterinary Nurse who joined the team in 2020. She has now passed all her written exams and will take her practical examinations this autumn at which point she will be a fully qualified member of the team. She loves all things dog, especially terriers, and has a particular interest in behaviour and neurology.

Clare qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 2001, and joined our team in 2004 just before we moved to our Brighouse hospital. Clare has her advanced Diploma in Surgical Nursing which she achieved in 2007. Her main role for the last 10 years has been as one of our invaluable night nurses. She is responsible for the care of our overnight patients, reassuring any that may be a little nervous and making sure they feel comforted and have lots of TLC. She will sit with the patients to ensure that they are eating properly and makes sure that all the patients are pain scored and comfortable so they get a good nights sleep. She will happily talk to any owner who wants an update on their pet at any time during the night.

Lucy joined us in 2015 as a Veterinary Care Assistant student. When she qualified she became a full time team member. She became a senior VCA in 2019 and looking after 2 other VCA's, helping to mentor them and giving them support they need. She has completed a level 5 diploma in canine behaviour and is currently studying level 6 diploma in animal behaviour with COAPE. Lucy has completed voluntary and paid work at DogsTrust training school and Dogs trust, helping with training and rehabilitation of the rescue dogs. Her care and expertise helps enormously in settling nervous and anxious dogs who need a hospital stay for surgery. She works very closely with the vet and nurse team and can give owners advice on any training their pet might need to help facilitate post op recovery at home.
Clare is a busy mum of 3 with a passion for working with dogs. Prior to joining us she regularly volunteered for the RSPCA and local dog shelters. She took a late career change in 2018 and joined Torrington Orthopaedics where she studied for and achieved her qualification as a Veterinary Care Assistant, helping our nursing team. "I love the fact that every day is different. I feel honoured that I can come to work , care and support so many beautiful animals on their road to recovery"
